It’s school break here, so the Till is off on the road. I’m taking advantage of unseasonably warm weather to go visit two of my bucket list wineries; Chateau de Pibarnon and Domaine du Tempier. Both make exceptional Bandol reds, whites, and of course rose.
The one piece of financial markets that doesn’t escape even Provence is the question of inflation. Every vigneron is concerned as the climate heats up and terroir is shifting under their feet. Hotter summers mean lower yields, and in 2022 that meant as about half as many hectolitre per acre.
As fate would have it the remaining grapes produce much better wine. Quality goes up and supply goes down, putting even more upward pressure on prices.
Markets are everywhere, and it’s a joy to see them through a different lens.
Next week we’re back to our regularly scheduled programming. Bon weekend.
